Fall 2021, Georgian Bay, Ontario.

This is literally the last boat trip of the season.

The winter freeze up begins along the eastern shore of Georgian Bay and ice forms along the shoreline first then slowly creeps out into the open water. Contractors never have enough time to finish work on the islands through the short season and sometimes push it to the last minute before the lake freezes over.

I live close to the marina and immediately saw the barge approaching the docks as I took off. The marina and surrounding water had already frozen over a few nights in a row but had broken up during the day and you can see white pieces of thicker ice inside the docks. That day had been a lot colder and the ice was over an inch thick by the afternoon. The barge was going very slowly and using its weight to break through the ice. I raced to get the drone in position and managed two or three quick shots before he docked.
